Weekly Roundup

Man, Halo skakkage is dwindling and I'm feeling sad. Tried to get some game on for Friday but the regulars are more interested in the Hockey playoffs - how can this be?? I mean I know the Rangers have made it after some years of pure suckage but they're up against the Devils. It's all over, they're done, come play Halo. It's much more fun watching my friend scream nonsensensical craziness.

I was let into a little secret yesterday by a friend of mine. Here's the deal - my fiance has a really nasty temper. He can't STAND to lose. He also has a really loud voice and tends to scream a lot when he gets killed. The last time all my friends played Halo 2 on XBoxLive, I kept getting annihilated and couldn't figure out how the hell people knew I was creeping up behind them. Well, the cat was let out of the bag last night. My friend Bill told me that he would hear my fiance's maniacal screams over my headset thanks to voice proximity. WTF? I'm gonna have to cut his tongue out while he's sleeping, I think. UGH and guys say women cry a lot? Obviously you haven't been around many men when they fail at something! (HAHA just kidding guys)

I'm so psyched for E3 - Last year was amazing but I think this year is just going to be phenomenal. I will try to post the blogs of all the people I know that will be keeping you informed. Of course I'll be taking lots of pics and writing like crazy so be sure to check back often. Also, if there's anything you're particularly interested in, let me know. I will try to find out about it.

I'm wondering what it'll be like without the eye candy, too. Will little boys be crying because they don't see mammary glands next to God of War 2? I'm sure many developers will just bite the bullet and pay the fines or just dress the girls in Latex cat suits or something.

Hopefully Sony will have something playable this year. That'd be a real treat. Graphics are a huge part of games but the BS CGI renders that the companies use to reel you in just doesn't do it for me, now. It's become a tease that never comes through. You just get sick of chasing it after a while.

Wii - What can I say? I know many of you are really looking forward to Nintendo's offering. I still have my reservations and this new name doesn't help. What crackhead decided this was a good name? Did they even think that some wouldn't call it the "W2" but rather the "WEE"? "Hi, I'd like to put a deposit down on a Wii, please." Yeah, you don't sound too psychotic! I haven't stopped laughing since I heard it. Maybe I should just get it for the endless stream of jokes I could hear.

"Could you bag my Wii up for me?"

"Dude, my Wii is so cool!"

"Can I borrow your Wii?"

"Wanna come over and play on my Wii?"

"My Wii runs really hot, I wonder if something's wrong with it?"

And you know it will only be a matter of time before fanboys of other systems buy stickers of Calvin "wiing" on one. Ok, ok, I'll stop. It's my lack of maturity and unwillingness to grow up. I apologize.

GamertagPics reopened the doors to the forums a couple of days ago. They've been down for a while and I know people were getting frustrated. WELL THEY'RE UP NOW! LEAVE ME ALONE! I need a job where I can work on that stuff all day long. It's becoming a drag that my real job gets in the way all the time.

The FragDolls put up their first video showcasing four of the finalists in the race to become the next elite female gamer. Not surprisingly, there are a few PMS girls up for the part. I'm glad to see some new faces in the running, though. It's obvious from the first video that the girls definitely have the spunk to succeed in the tough role. You don't really get to see their gaming skills but it's good to hear about their backgrounds and each one did a good job representing themselves. This week, they introduced Moe (Once a part of the ill-fated "Female Eye for the Gamer Guy" on 1up.com), PerfectDark (PMS clan), Angel (PMS Clan), and Cella (PMS clan co-founder). Check the video out here.

Living in Oblivion

No, this isn't a look back at the greatest music decade ever, this is all about my newest addiction - Oblivion.

I have been playing Oblivion for a couple of weeks now and find that it's starting to make me crazy. I'm sure you've all had those times when you start dreaming about imaginary levels, hearing sounds or seeing things that remind you of part of a game. That is if you are sick in the head like me!

I was riding in the car this past weekend and saw a pretty red flower on the side of the road. My first thought was not, "Oh how pretty." It was, "Oh look, that looks like a Bergamot but it could also be Flax. I wonder what potions I could make with it." I mean really, that's not right.

Anyway, back to the game. You may not want to read this if you hate spoilers. I will do my best to keep things vague but please stop reading now if you don't want to know anything at all that will happen in the game.

My proudest moments so far:

  • I am a master of sneak.

  • I killed a bunch of vampires and haven't turned into one...YET...

  • I bought a house (even though it was overrun by ghosts).

My stupidest moments so far:

  • I tried pick pocketing the Imperial City jailor while he was sleeping. I got caught and was thrown in jail.

  • I tried pick pocketing a Mage. I got caught and was thrown out of the guild. I now have to go pick weeds for some doofus at the Arcane University. DAH

  • I shot my friend to death because I was too far away to see who it was and just shot arrows blindly. (I reverted to a previous save)

  • I didn't realize I had to sleep to bump up my level so I was a level one for days.

My most annoying moments so far:

  • Stupid slaughterfish didn't respawn for days

  • I don't know if it's because I'm a master of sneak but if I creep up behind some enemies and strike at them, they just grunt and jump forward but keep their back to me so I can drop them in 3 strokes (6x damage if you attack while sneaking).

  • My 360 froze twice but luckily not at critical moments.

  • I bought a Bay horse, rode it for two minutes, got attacked simultaneously by a troll and a wolf so while I took care of the wolf, the troll beat my horse to death. Disgusting creature.

  • The loading between "closed door" areas can get to you after a while.

  • Getting all flustered in fights so I accidentally push down on the right thumbstick making my view alternate between first and third person.

I have to say, I really tried to get into Morrowind back on the XBox but it just didn't keep me interested. Oblivion, however, has me enthralled. Not only is it just a beautifully rendered game, there's just so much to do. I don't have to follow the main story, I can go do any quest I please. I can make potions all day, I can kill bandits, trolls and ogres (I have an issue killing the wolves and I refuse to kill deer. Yes, I know it's just a game, but still...), I can steal, I can explore ruins, pick flowers, eat nasty stuff, sleep, train, talk to characters. It's amazing. This is my first real RPG (I don't consider Fable a real RPG like it should have been) and it's got me hooked.

Another thing I love about the game is the character creation. Sometimes, there's too much customization (Tiger Woods for 360 for example) but the options in Oblivion are very cool. You get all kinds of face molding choices and of course classes and races to choose from. You will also get to choose your birth sign that bumps up certain attributes. Right now, I am a female Dark Elf with my own "sneak" class and was born under the sign of the thief. Hey, I don't intend to steal in real life so why not have some fun in fantasy land?

I would highly recommend this game to anyone. Even those of my friends who are hardcore FPS players have been drawn into the world of Cyradil. It's at least worth the rental!

Also, if you have the game and are experiencing choppy play or excrutiating load times, you may want to try and clear the cache. This is the official word from Bethesda Softworks on fixing some freezing issues:

Oblivion uses the Xbox 360 hard drive extensively to cache (copy and reuse) game data. This is done to optimize all loading the game does. It has been found in rare cases on some Xbox 360s that the cached data can get overly fragmented. This exhibits itself by the game taking a long time to load anything from menus, dialogue, sounds, objects, levels, and more.

To solve this problem, reset your Xbox, and hold down the A button as the game is booting up. If any button is held while Oblivion is loading, it will clear its hard drive cache, and create a new one. Once you see the “Bethesda Softworks” logo video, the game is already loaded, and the cache should have been cleared.

Note, this does not effect your game in any way other than loading. You will not lose any saved data.
